A call center operating under the name Smart Geek Telecom Private Limited, formerly known as KGN Infotech, was raided by officials of the Electronic Complex Police Station in Kolkata. The raid led to the arrest of 41 individuals, including six from the call center.
The call center was found to be running an illegal operation, duping innocent people from foreign countries by promising them free rewards and health schemes. The gang would target senior citizens and coerce them into making payments through various modes of payment.
During the raid, officials seized 50 computers, three laptops, computer accessories, and 41 mobile phones. The arrested individuals, including five females, will be presented in the court of Ld. ACJM, Bidhannagar, today and will be taken into police custody.
The case has been filed under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 419 (punishment for cheating by personation), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 467 (forgery of valuable security), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (using as genuine a forged document), and 120B (punishment for criminal conspiracy). The case also falls under sections 20 and 21 of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885.
Such operations are a serious concern, and authorities are taking strict measures to prevent such activities from happening in the future. The police have requested citizens to be wary of such scams and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
